Description: We report a dataset of all known and published occurrence records of animals of the phylum Rotifera, including Bdelloidea, Monogononta, and Seisonacea (with the exclusion of Acanthocephala) for Africa and surrounding islands and archipelagos. The dataset includes 27,225 records of 957 taxa (subspecies: 39; species: 819; genus: 81; family: 17; group: 1), gathered from 706 published papers. The published literature spans from 1854 to 2022, with the highest number of records in the decades 1990-1999 and 2010-2019. 230 records of "species inquirendae", "nomina nuda", and "genera inquirenda" found in the published literature were not included in the dataset. Almost 90 % of the data are georeferenced. The African countries with the highest number of taxa are Nigeria, Algeria, South Africa, and Democratic Republic of the Congo, whereas no records are yet available for a dozen countries. The number of species known from each country can be explained mostly by sampling efforts, measured as the number of papers published for each country up to October 2022. This detailed literature search increased the number of known rotifer taxa at species, subspecies, form and variety level reported in previous reviews, which were 639 in 1986 (De Ridder, 1986) and 765 (Smolak et al., 2022) in 2022. Of the taxa reported in the current dataset, 167 (18%) are Bdelloidea, 665 (698%) Ploima, 97 (10%) Flosculariaceae, 27 (3%) Collothecacea and one representative of Seisonacea, the marine epizoic rotifer Seison africanus Sørensen, Segers & Funch, 2005 described and recorded only from coastal waters of Kenya (Sørensen et al., 2005). The data were structured based on the Darwin Core standard (Wieczorek et al., 2012). The dataset is structured to have in each row each record of a rotifer taxon from a sample from Africa and surrounding islands, as cited in the literature. The columns report the original and updated taxon name, additional taxonomic information together with origin of the data and habitat. All invalid names (i.e. at the level of species inquirenda, nomen nudum, genus inquirendum) were not included in the records uploaded to GBIF. All names were also checked against the backbone of GBIF.

Description: The dataset of known rotifer records in Italy was built based on 332 published papers, spanning the period from 1838 to 2022. The detailed literature search increased to 584 the number of known rotifer taxa at species and subspecies rank reported in previous reviews, which were 245 in 1995 (Braioni & Ricci, 1995) and 483 in 2022 (Fontaneto et al., 2022). The dataset included 271 published papers with georeferenced coordinates. The dataset was structured based on the Darwin Core Standard (Wieczorek et al., 2012), with each row containing a record of a rotifer taxon from a sample from Italy, as cited in the literature. The column "Scientific Name" could report different names compared to the original reference due to review of taxonomic information. This dataset includes 12,015 occurrence records with georeferenced coordinates. A total of 9,604 records belong to 493 taxa at valid species and subspecies genus level, 668 records belong to 18 species groups (e.g., Synchaeta gr. tremula-oblonga, Trichocerca gr. similis-birostris), 1674 records belong to 53 taxa at genus level, and 69 records belong to 6 families. Of 11,347 records belonging to valid names, 674 (5.94 %) are Bdelloidea, 70 are Collothecacea (0,62 %), 1016 are Flosculariaceae (8,95 %), 9586 (84,48 % ) are Ploima, and just 1 record of Seisonacea.

Description: This georeferenced dataset describes a 25-year (1986-2010) monitoring studies of phytoplankton abundance and biomass in Lake Candia, a eutrophic, natural, small, and shallow lake located in north-western Italy. The lake has been subjected to biomanipulation experiments aiming to improve its water quality since 1986 to 2010. It belongs to the national (LTER-Italy), European (LTER-Europe) and International (ILTER) long-term ecological research (LTER) networks. Making available this dataset also represents a contribution to the current activities of the LTER networks, aiming at making accessible the time series of the LTER sites, in order to reconstruct trends and dynamics and to identify and compare reliable trends and can be useful for further ecological and biodiversity studies on small and shallow lakes. The interest of the dataset is also remarkable because Lake Candia belongs to the national (LTER-Italy), European (LTER-Europe) and International (ILTER) long-term ecological research (LTER) networks, where the long-term site-based monitoring approach and the site comparison are important to determine spatial and temporal trends and changes.

Description: The collection of Tardigrada by Giuseppe Ramazzotti, preserved at the Water Research Institute of the National Research Council (CNR-IRSA) in Verbania, Italy, is composed of numerous slides and microscopic preparations of tardigrades, including animals and their eggs. It is a historical collection that includes samples taken over a period of years from 1938 to 1964 in Europe, Africa, North and South America by one of the Italian taxonomists working on the phylum Tardigrada. The dataset of the Ramazzotti collection is composed of 3319 records, prepared within the Project ITINERIS (Italian Integrated Environmental Research Infrastructures System) dedicated to build the Italian Hub of Research Infrastructures in the environmental scientific domain. The purpose of creating this dataset is to protect the information through the digitalization of the samples, and to facilitate sharing the information on the animals collected by Ramazzotti and stored at CNR-IRSA, Verbania. For this reason, each record in the database is associated with a photograph of the microscopic slide. The data have been organized into a standardized Darwin Core Archive format, so that they can be harmonized and be available globally, through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility infrastructure (GBIF).

Description: A data set including information on macroinvertebrates identified to genus/species group/species level was created within the monitoring activities of several European and national projects. The data set includes 2111 macroinvertebrate records on temporal fragmentary data from lakes Paione (upper, middle, and lower lakes Paione), and 530 records on spatial data relative to eight other high-altitude lakes from the Ossola Valley (North-western Italy, Piedmont, Central Alps). The study area is included within the Lake Maggiore watershed. All records are georeferenced because, since the beginning of the studies, temporal data were taken in the same sampling sites over years. The temporal data span over the period 1989-2020, the spatial data refer to the 2019-2020 sampling activity. The dataset is available for download as csv format at the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) data infrastructure.

Description: We report the results of a faunistic survey focused on freshwater and limno-terrestrial meiofauna to improve biodiversity knowledge in a protected area in the Eastern part of the French Pyrénées: the Massane Forest Reserve (336 Ha). The survey provided 1192 occurrence records from 315 taxa (most resolved at species-level), uploaded as a shared online dataset. The dataset of freshwater and limno-terrestrial meiofauna from the Massane Reserve and surrounding areas was built starting from 150 samples collected during several survey in the area between 2021 and 2023, covering diverse organismic groups from different habitats. The highest number of occurrences and distinguishable morpho-taxa belong to the group Nematoda (775 occurrences, 172 taxa), followed by Rotifera (219 occurrences, 67 taxa), Platyhelminthes (85 occurrences, 32 taxa), Tardigrada (69 occurrences, 25 taxa), and Gastrotricha (39 occurrences, 19 taxa). A diversity of meiofaunal organisms was found, in large numbers, in all the samples screened: from stream biofilms and sediments, to forest floor soils, mosses, and litter, to a broad range of tree-related micro-habitats associated with beech-like epixylic mosses and lichens, tree cavities, woodpecker breeding holes, bark pockets and fruiting bodies of saproxylic fungi. The dataset includes 1192 occurence records of 315 distinct taxa of meiofauna collected at the Massane Forest Reserve: 219 taxa have been diagnosed at species-level, 75 at genus-level and 21 at family-level. Of the taxa reported in the current dataset, 41 (13%) are Rotifera Bdelloidea (157 occurrences), 26 (8%) are Rotifera Monogononta (62 occurrences), 19 (6%) are Gastrotricha (39 occurrences), 25 (7.9%) are Tardigrada (69 occurrences), 172 (54%) are Nematoda (775 occurrences) and 32 (10%) are Platyhelminthes (85 occurences). The data were structured based on the Darwin Core standard (Wieczorek et al., 2012). This survey makes the Massane forest one of the few protected areas of the world with a taxa-inclusive meiofauna dataset, which could serve as a standard inventory to further consider micro-invertebrates in forest conservation.

Description: This dataset includes information on the benthic copepod assemblages of the littoral zone of Lake Maggiore (Northern-western Italy-Switzerland). Data were collected in the frame of the Interreg Italy-Switzerland 2014-2020 Parchi Verbano Ticino Project (ID: 481668), funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). We compiled a dataset listing 234 occurrence records of benthic copepod species recorded in three littoral sampling stations situated in three protected areas, of which two are part of the Natura 2000 network in Italy and one is part of the Emerald Network in Switzerland. We collected the specimens during the summer-autumn period in 2019-2021. We identified copepods down to the species level. We created a dataset with individual georeferenced occurrence records for each of these species, organized in a standardized Darwin Core Archive format. We made available a total of 13 distinct taxonomic entities and 234 unique georeferenced occurrence records related to the benthic copepod assemblage of the littoral zone of Lake Maggiore. This dataset is relevant in that it concerns the benthic copepods of the littoral zones of a large lake whose water levels are regulated for human uses. The dataset has the potential to assist the authorities in charge of managing Lake Maggiore’s water levels in addressing the ecological risk connected with water management and developing shared implementation strategies for human activities that are sustainable on the lake.

Description: We report a total of 54 records concerning samples collected by Irma Pierpaoli in the last century. The samples are a part of the entire collection of macroalgae species included in the herbarium MBMP. The “Irma Pierpaoli herbarium” is owned by the Marine Biology Museum of Porto Cesareo (Lecce, Italy) related to the DiSTeBA department of Salento University and it was named after the botanist who collected the samples. It was registered in the Hindex Herbariorum site with the code MBMP in July 2024. At the CNR-IRSA in Taranto two herbaria are stored: the Herbarium of the Talassografico Institute “A. Cerruti” and the historical Herbarium “Irma Pierpaoli” dating back to the Twenties of the last century. Irma Pierpaoli, throughout her career as a school teacher, first in Taranto and then in Senigallia, devoted her free time to the study of seaweeds. During the years spent in Taranto, she was a guest of the Talassografico Institute, where she carried out her researches. We owe her the first studies on the benthic seaweeds of the Taranto seas. She left us the aforementioned rich herbarium containing about 600 specimens collected in the high Ionian Sea and in the middle Adriatic.

Description: This dataset represents the collection of the Ephemeroptera slides held at CNR-IRSA in Brugherio, Italy. The list includes specimens primarily collected in Italy starting from 1989 using qualitative methods, including some Italian endemisms. This is the personal A. Buffagni’s slide collection and has the dual purpose of increasing knowledge about Italian Ephemeroptera species through morphological study and serving as a reference tool for cataloguing and quantifying Italy's Ephemeroptera biodiversity. Each row in the dataset corresponds to a slide containing dissected body parts (e.g., mouthparts, thorax, abdomen). Typically, each individual is mounted on a single slide (i.e., row); however, in some cases, the same individual is mounted on multiple slides due to its size. As part of the ITINERIS project and the National Biodiversity Future Centre (NBFC), Ephemeroptera samples have been curated, catalogued, and digitised to make natural history collections virtually available to the public at any level, simplifying access and sharing of information. Drawings, preserved specimens and photographs of living specimens can be added to the collection. Licence of use: both access and use are free to any non-commercial user (CC-BY-NC 4.0). The authors recommend users to provide a link to the original dataset in GBIF (https://www.gbif.org/dataset/1c016e80-a3dc-47d5-b49b-cd89885992d0) and to cite the present paper when using the data. Description: The survey is part of the research project 7-20 “Rotifers in small coastal ponds”, funded by the Norwegian Biodiversity Information Center. We collected samples from 25 ponds. The selection of ponds followed the criteria that they had to be small, between 20 and 500 m2, situated below 50 m above sea level, isolated from other water catchments, and preferably within 1 km of nearest marine coastline.
