Description: The IBE cryobank preserves plant organs in liquid nitrogen, at -196 °C, specifically: (i) polyembryonic seeds from 24 accessions of Citrus spp. from the Medicean Collection of Villa Reale di Castello, Florence, dating back to the XVI century; (i) dormant buds from 19 accessions of ancient varieties from the Veneto region, Italy; and (iii) dormant buds from 3 accessions of plum (Prunus domestica) from the C.A.V.-Center of Nursery Activities of Tebano, Ravenna. The cryo-procedures utilized for cryopreservation are the desiccation and direct immersion in liquid nitrogen of polyembryonic seeds (Citrus) and the dormant bud technique for the conservation of uni-nodal segments of Malus domestica and Prunus domestica. The ultimate goal is the long-term maintenance of ancient fruit tree germplasm. Tissue culture and micropropagation are the techniques used for germplasm recovering and propagation.

Description: The CNR-IBE-INSECTS collection includes wood insects (mainly Coleoptera) collected in forests, on infested wood, or from other European Laboratory. The insect collection is important for biological tests in accordance with European standards for determining natural durability and effectiveness of wood preservatives. Specimens are maintained in wood blocks within a climatized room (RH 80% ± 5; 28 °C ± 2).

Description: The wood collection CNR-IBE-XYLARIUM includes about 12,000 wooden tablets of about 5,700 different species from all continents, and the anatomical preparations of the three fundamental sections of about 4,000 species. The collection is made of both macroscopic samples (tablets of about 7 x 14 x 0,5 cm) and microscopic samples (anatomical preparations to be observed under the optical microscope). In addition, a collection of about 4,000 wood samples (secondary xilotheque, exchange xilotheque) is maintained for the exchange of samples with other collections or for the formation of specific collections for schools, institutions, etc. Other specific collections include about 150 Brazilian woods in the form of book-shaped tablets; 30 Gabon woods in the form of pocket booklets; a box donated by the École Supérieure du Bois in Nantes (France) containing samples of about 80 African woods. All material is stored and managed on magnetic support.

Description: The CNR-IBE-ACOGER collection includes 29 olive autochthonous genotypes of Emilia Romagna (Northern Italy) maintained at the IBE-CNR Conservation Centre, Multiplication Centre and olive plant nursery according to European and national (QVI) rules. The collection aims are: (1) safeguard, identification and selection of autochthonous olive genetic resources of Emilia Romagna region; (2) registration of selected genotypes in the Regional Volunteer Repertoire of Agricultural Genetic Resources; (3) registration of selected genotypes on National Inventory of Pre-base material; (4) propagation and commercialization of selected genotypes according to genetic and sanitary certified EU rules; (5) reintroduction of autochthonous genotypes in olive orchards with higher agronomic features and improved quality of oils; (6) valorization of Northern Italy EVOOs biodiversity; (7) selection of oils characterized by valuable and peculiar aromas that can differentiate them from the oils currently available on the market; (8) selection of oils with high nutritional properties (high content in phenols, vitamins, and oleic acid), stressing their importance in the prevention of degenerative and cardio-vascular diseases.
