Description: The collection of Tardigrada by Giuseppe Ramazzotti, preserved at the Water Research Institute of the National Research Council (CNR-IRSA) in Verbania, Italy, is composed of numerous slides and microscopic preparations of tardigrades, including animals and their eggs. It is a historical collection that includes samples taken over a period of years from 1938 to 1964 in Europe, Africa, North and South America by one of the Italian taxonomists working on the phylum Tardigrada. The dataset of the Ramazzotti collection is composed of 3319 records, prepared within the Project ITINERIS (Italian Integrated Environmental Research Infrastructures System) dedicated to build the Italian Hub of Research Infrastructures in the environmental scientific domain. The purpose of creating this dataset is to protect the information through the digitalization of the samples, and to facilitate sharing the information on the animals collected by Ramazzotti and stored at CNR-IRSA, Verbania. For this reason, each record in the database is associated with a photograph of the microscopic slide. The data have been organized into a standardized Darwin Core Archive format, so that they can be harmonized and be available globally, through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility infrastructure (GBIF).

Description: A data set including information on macroinvertebrates identified to genus/species group/species level was created within the monitoring activities of several European and national projects. The data set includes 2111 macroinvertebrate records on temporal fragmentary data from lakes Paione (upper, middle, and lower lakes Paione), and 530 records on spatial data relative to eight other high-altitude lakes from the Ossola Valley (North-western Italy, Piedmont, Central Alps). The study area is included within the Lake Maggiore watershed. All records are georeferenced because, since the beginning of the studies, temporal data were taken in the same sampling sites over years. The temporal data span over the period 1989-2020, the spatial data refer to the 2019-2020 sampling activity. The dataset is available for download as csv format at the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) data infrastructure.

Description: The dataset comprises more than 1000 progenies obtained by crosses between various cultivars of Olea europaea subsp. europaea which are maintained in clonal orchards in Central Italy (Umbria, Lazio, Toscana). Parent cultivars are kept by CNR-IBBR in Perugia, Umbria, Italy. Overall, the CNR-IBBR-PG Olive collection comprises about 1,700 different accessions, including clones and crosses of many European and extra-European varieties. The main goal is the long-term preservation of the olive biodiversity as a source of genetic material for selecting and cultivating new Olive tree varieties and cultivars with specific characteristics . Molecular identification, morphological characterization, and bio-agronomic and metabolic evaluation are currently underway.

Each row in the dataset corresponds to a single vial related to a single sampling event (site and date) and to a specific sampling unit. The single vial contains one or more individuals of the same taxon. A catalogue number consisting of the collection code (PIEMNR) and a progressive six digit number is assigned to each row. The final digit is a letter if pictures of the preserved specimens were taken. This dataset is provided within the Activity WP6.6, "National Network of Aquatic Science Collections," of the ITINERIS project - Italian Integrated Environmental Research Infrastructures System - CUP B53C22002150006. Description: The dataset derives from the first large-scale analysis using nuclear molecular markers to assess the genetic diversity and structure of Cupressus sempervirens L. Genetic and fossil data were combined to infer the possible role of human activity and evolutionary history in shaping the diversity of cypress populations. Thirty populations with six polymorphic nuclear microsatellite markers were analyzed. Dramatic reductions in heterozygosity and allelic richness were observed from east to west across the species range. Structure analysis assigned individuals to two main groups separating the central Mediterranean and eastern populations. The two main groups could be further divided into five subgroups, which showed the following geographical distributions: Turkey with the Greek islands Rhodes and Samos, Greece (Crete), Southern Italy, Northern Italy, and Tunisia with Central Italy. This pattern of genetic structure is also supported by SAMOVA and Barrier analyses. Palaeobotanical data indicated that Cupressus was present in Italy in the Pliocene, Pleistocene, and Holocene. Furthermore, the survey showed that Italian cypress populations experienced bottlenecks resulting in reduced genetic diversity, allelic richness, and higher genetic differentiation. Recent colonization or introduction may also have influenced levels of diversity detected in the Italian populations, as most individuals in this range today have multilocus genotypes also present in the eastern range of the species. The data reveal a new interpretation of the history of cypress distribution characterized by ancient eastern populations (Turkey and Greek islands) and a mosaic of recently introduced trees and remnants of ancient, depauperate populations in the central Mediterranean range.

Description: The frozen collection consists of over 3,000 transgenic and mutant strains of non-parasitic nematodes, Caenorhabditis elegans species, accumulated over forty years. The collection, established in the early ’80s by Dr. Paolo Bazzicalupo, is kept in triplicate, is unique in Italy, and supports numerous Italian groups. C. elegans is the only multicellular animal model that can be frozen and stabs are stable for decades. Description: The Medicinal Herb Garden (also known as "Giardino dei Semplici") is a botanic collection of more than 100 living plant species, primarily officinal and wild edible (alimurgic) plants. The collection aims to preserve local biodiversity and disseminate knowledge on botany sciences and medicinal plants. It also promotes pharmacological and phytosanitary research to deepen and apply knowledge about the biological properties of herbs and their extracts. Medicinal and wild edible plants are conserved, whose main taxa are dicots, monocots and Ginkgoopsida. Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Myrtaceae, Apiaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Rosaceae, and Plantaginaceae are the main represented families. Description: The Ermanno Quaggiotto malacology collection, donated by himself in 2014 to the Natural History and Archaeological Museum of Vicenza, consists of 3,614 specimens of terrestrial and freshwater mollusks, divided into 548 inventory numbers. The collection is primarily local (Veneto region, NE Italy), given that most of the specimens were collected in the provinces of Vicenza and Verona, and dates between 1972 and 2003. Description: The dataset includes Ascomycetous fungi isolated from forest and urban trees (Ophiostoma ulmi, O.novo-ulmi , Ceratocystis platani, Diplodia sapinea, Botryosphaericeae) and oomycetes isolated in ornamental nursery (Pythium, Phytophthora, Mortariella). The CNR-IPSP-FPOFUAOPWS collection preserves about 1500 strains for research purposes, also includes strains from collections of other Research centers or Universities. The strains are mainly isolated from plant tissues in different geographical areas. Preservation techniques: (i) CRYO: Freezer at -20 °C, in cryovials with spore suspension or with mycelium plug in water glycerol (50% v/v) or in pure water; (ii) FRESH CULTURES: Refrigerator at 4 °C in agar slants with mycelium. The ultimate goals of the collection are: taxonomical Identification (morphological, molecular), molecular typing; isolation, preservation and cultivation of microorganisms; population genetic studies; genetic and phenotypic variability; host-pathogen interaction; inoculation for disease resistance; biocontrol; ecological and physiology studies, biochemical characterization. Description: The dataset gathers metadata of crustacean specimens preserved at the CNR ISMAR in Venice. The collection contains benthic invertebrates collected during community analysis studies for the biological characterisation of the Lagoon of Venice, and focused on biological diversity either as basic knowledge or as a contribution to understand the mechanisms regulating the lagoon ecosystem biodiversity. The study focused on the Dese estuary, a distinctive habitat inside the northern Venice lagoon area and characterised not only by wide tidal amplitudes, but also by the Dese River flow, being the main tributary into the lagoon and an important source of urban and agriculture pollution. The estuary (about 14 km) extends from Dese outflow in the lagoon to the Lido inlet, forming a narrow, meandering channel (canale di Burano) between sal marshes and mud flats. In the framework of the RI DiSSCo and the ITINERIS project, the crustacean samples underwent curation, cataloging and digitisation in order to make virtually available the NSCs to any level of audience simplifying access and sharing information.

Description: The collection includes organisms belonging to the Northern Adriatic epimegabenthic fauna. Epimegabenthos is conventionally defined as the zoobenthos living at the top of the substrate and larger than 1 cm. This compartment includes most macroinvertebrate phyla, such as Annelida, Arthropoda, Bryozoa, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Mollusca, Porifera. Samples belong to coastal benthic habitats ranging in depth from intertidal to 30 m, either manually or by means of dredges or trawl nets. Samples are generally preserved in ethyl alcohol 70% or dry. Most samples have been collected along the Veneto coastline during 2016-2019 monitoring activities in the framework of the Marine Strategy Directive 2008/56/EC.

Description: The data set was developed at CNR-IRSA during the activity of the Project Interreg Italy-Switzerland project Parchi Verbano Ticino funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF, ID: 481668). Data are organised in a systematic and coherent way according to Darwin Core Standards. Occurrence records of chironomids (Insecta, Arthropoda, Diptera, Chironomidae) and Oligochaeta (Annelida, Clitellata) in Lake Maggiore were collected along the shores at depths comprised between 50 and 120 cm at three sampling sites located in protected areas: two sites in Italy and one in Switzerland. The lake belongs to the national (LTER-Italy), European (LTER-Europe) and International (ILTER) long-term ecological research (LTER) networks. All 600 occurrence records are georeferenced. The data set presents a total of 373 records of Chironomids larvae and 227 of Oligochaetes sampled in summer-autumn period during 2019-2021. The dataset includes 336 records at species level, 184 at genus level, 73 records at subfamily level. The data set includes 23 columns with each row contains a record of a chironomid or oligochaete taxon with taxonomy information according to the Darwin Core Standard (Wieczorek et al., 2012), a sampling date, location (site, habitat, locality, number of a replicate) and abundance of each taxon. We believe the strong potential of open access occurrence records in a standardised Darwin Core Archive format in biogeography studies and ecological research in the context of global environmental changes is indisputable.

Description: We report a total of 54 records concerning samples collected by Irma Pierpaoli in the last century. The samples are a part of the entire collection of macroalgae species included in the herbarium MBMP. The “Irma Pierpaoli herbarium” is owned by the Marine Biology Museum of Porto Cesareo (Lecce, Italy) related to the DiSTeBA department of Salento University and it was named after the botanist who collected the samples. It was registered in the Hindex Herbariorum site with the code MBMP in July 2024. At the CNR-IRSA in Taranto two herbaria are stored: the Herbarium of the Talassografico Institute “A. Cerruti” and the historical Herbarium “Irma Pierpaoli” dating back to the Twenties of the last century. Irma Pierpaoli, throughout her career as a school teacher, first in Taranto and then in Senigallia, devoted her free time to the study of seaweeds. During the years spent in Taranto, she was a guest of the Talassografico Institute, where she carried out her researches. We owe her the first studies on the benthic seaweeds of the Taranto seas. She left us the aforementioned rich herbarium containing about 600 specimens collected in the high Ionian Sea and in the middle Adriatic.

Description: This dataset represents the collection of the Ephemeroptera slides held at CNR-IRSA in Brugherio, Italy. The list includes specimens primarily collected in Italy starting from 1989 using qualitative methods, including some Italian endemisms. This is the personal A. Buffagni’s slide collection and has the dual purpose of increasing knowledge about Italian Ephemeroptera species through morphological study and serving as a reference tool for cataloguing and quantifying Italy's Ephemeroptera biodiversity. Each row in the dataset corresponds to a slide containing dissected body parts (e.g., mouthparts, thorax, abdomen). Typically, each individual is mounted on a single slide (i.e., row); however, in some cases, the same individual is mounted on multiple slides due to its size. As part of the ITINERIS project and the National Biodiversity Future Centre (NBFC), Ephemeroptera samples have been curated, catalogued, and digitised to make natural history collections virtually available to the public at any level, simplifying access and sharing of information. Drawings, preserved specimens and photographs of living specimens can be added to the collection. Licence of use: both access and use are free to any non-commercial user (CC-BY-NC 4.0). The authors recommend users to provide a link to the original dataset in GBIF (https://www.gbif.org/dataset/1c016e80-a3dc-47d5-b49b-cd89885992d0) and to cite the present paper when using the data. Stakeholders interested in additional information can contact the authors via information provided in the metadata.

Description: The dataset includes metadata of endophytic bacteria with plant growth promoting activity and bacteria usable for bio-remedation of polluted environments from the CNR-IBBR-SUB collection, which is maintained at Institute of Biosciences and Bioresources (IBBR) in Naples, Italy. Endophytic bacteria were isolated from rice plants grown in Italy and in the State of Mali (West Africa), while polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degrading bacteria were isolated from the industrial zone of the port of Marghera (Venice, Italy). Microorganisms are cryopreserved at -80 °C resuspended in growth media containing cryoprotectants (glycerol). Frozen microorganisms can be revived by thawing at 37 °C and inoculating into fresh culture medium. The main aim of the collection is to study bacteria interacting with legumes and cereals (e.g., N-fixation, phytohormones production, etc.) and their ability to improve host plants resistance to abiotic stresses.
